What is Colon Hydrotherapy?
Also known as colon irrigation, colon cleansing, or a colonic--
Colon Hydrotherapy is a form of alternative medicine that is used to cleanse, restore, and maintain optimum colon health without the use of drugs. The process is simply warm, filtered, gravity-fed water flowing gently into the colon by way of a sterile, disposable rectal tube. The introduction of water into the large intestine gently coaxes the body to release built-up fecal matter, toxins and gas through the action of natural peristalsis (the wave-like muscular action that pushes the contents through the bowel); the process that is repeated throughout the session.

The history of the practice of colon cleansing, in its most basic form, began with the use of the enema. Ancient Egyptian documentation from the 14th Century BC shows the first recording of colon lavage using enemas (then called "clysters"), which were also mentioned in the writings of several other cultures in antiquity, including the Sumerians, Chinese, Hindus, Greeks, and Romans.
It was J.H. Kellogg, M.D., who popularized this form of alternative medicine in the United States. In 1917, it was reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association that he was able to successfully treat all but 20 of 40,000 gastrointestinal patients using only diet, exercise and enemas-- no surgery. Dr. Kellogg's published success with enemas led to the development of advanced colon cleansing procedures known as colonics or colonic irrigations.
Because of its many health benefits, colon hydrotherapy flourished in the U.S. until the mid-1960's, at which time it began a slow decline. By the early 1970's, most colonic equipment had been removed from hospitals and nursing homes, displaced by the use of prescriptive laxative drugs and colostomy surgery.
Colon hydrotherapy went on to gain the attention of James A Wiltsie, M.D., who stated that "our knowledge of the normal and abnormal physiology of the colon, and of its pathology and management, has not kept pace with that of many organs and systems of the body."
He went on to say, "As long as we continue to assume that the colon will take care of itself, just that long will we remain in complete ignorance of perhaps the most important source of ill health in the whole body."
Why Cleanse the Colon?
Colon Hydrotherapy has become supplementary in treating disease, and for preventative health. With colon cancer being the #2 cause of death in the US and 100,000 people having their colon removed annually, it is important to understand how to promote proper bowel function, as well as prioritize your digestive health to be a vital part of your wellness routine.
A healthy digestive tract helps support a healthy immune system!
Besides the colon being the 'sewer system' of the body, a healthy colon absorbs water and hosts good bacteria that produce vitamins, such as K and some B vitamins. When waste material builds up over a long period of time, the colon starts to weaken, and the digestive process can become toxic. The body reacts by slowing down other functions and becoming sluggish.
Possible signs of colon build-up are: coated tongue, sallow complexion, abnormal body odor, dark circles under the eyes, cold hands and feet, brittle nails and hair, sagging posture, pot belly, tension, fatigue, allergies, indigestion, chronic headaches, irritability, nervousness, nausea, depression, asthma, and backaches.
Who Can Benefit?
Colon hydrotherapy has been found to assist the body with healing a variety of conditions, such as: allergies, arthritis, asthma, acne, ADD, body odor, memory lapses, hypertension, chronic fatigue, brittle hair and nails, spastic colon, cold hands and feet, colitis, headaches, multiple sclerosis, constipation, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel, mouth sores, nausea, peripheral neuropathies, peptic ulcer, potbelly, poor posture, seizures, muscle pain, joint aches, chest pain, skin rashes, toxic environmental/occupational exposure, and pigmentation.

What Are the Effects?
Although we cannot guarantee benefits, there is a high potential value in the effects of colon hydrotherapy. This treatment removes fecal material from the colon walls and dilutes the bacterial toxin concentration in the large intestine.
Some benefits of a colonic treatment can include increased energy, improved circulation, clearer skin and eyes, mental clarity, weight normalizing, better digestions, and relief from bloating and heaviness. Therapeutic effects can include improved muscle tone, reduced stagnation, and reduced toxic waste absorption.
